Hush Interiors wins with Christchurch Town Hall project

24 June 2019

Hush Interiors has won two awards at the 2019 Association of Wall and Ceilings Industries (AWCI) New Zealand Awards of Excellence for their work on the Christchurch Town Hall.

Hush Interiors was awarded the win for the Heritage category as well as the sought after People’s Choice category at the awards ceremony on the evening of 15 June, which was part of the annual AWCI New Zealand conference, held in Christchurch.

The Christchurch Town Hall has always been an iconic building in the Christchurch cityscape, not just because of its function but also because it is one of only a handful of the city’s heritage buildings in the central city that is, or will be, open for the public to enjoy.

The reinstatement and refurbishment required that the original character and style of the building had to be preserved as part of the restoration, which was one of the key challenges of the project. The upgrade has resulted in the building being modernised and aligned with current compliance and building codes, while still respecting the site’s heritage.

In keeping with the original character of the site, Hush Interiors also replicated old plaster tiles from the Town Hall and installed these in a new building added to the rear of the site, which will be the new home for the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra.

As a category winner at the New Zealand awards, Hush Interiors is now entered into the Australasian competition to be held during the AWCI ANZ conference in Uluru, on 6-9 October. This follows on from their win at the Australasian awards in 2017 for the ANZ Centre.
